Read MoreTuesday, January 19, 2021, marked the 84th anniversary of Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority, Inc. As part of our celebration, Sorors participated in an activity to honor the 400,000 people in the United States who have lost their lives to COVID-19. More than 60 Sorors from across the nation met on-line to take part in the service sponsored by the Presidential Inaugural Committee in Washington, D.C. At 5:30 pm EST, LKM Sorors joined people across the country to ring bells for one minute. As an additional tribute to honor LKM’s Founders Day, Sorors lit candles to represent hope, one of the basic tenets of LKM articulated by Founder Florence K. Norman. Sorors shared reflections on LKM and the legacy of Mrs. Norman. The energy and hope was palpable. The day before the swearing-in ceremony of President Joseph R. Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, LKM celebrated our Sorority's history, the strides made by all women—especially women of color—and prayed for a more united democracy.
Read MoreOn Saturday, January 16, 2021 Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority, Inc., held a virtual Interest Meeting with women across the United States. Multi-skilled women from Birmingham, Alabama; Dallas, Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Memphis, Tennessee; and Spartanburg, South Carolina, attended the meeting. Grand Basileus Ditra Scruggs led the all-star LKM cast by giving the greeting and occasion. National Second Anti-Basileus Lorretta Turnage moderated the meeting and presented a slide show entitled, “Who is LKM?” National First Anti-Basileus Nancy Mance explained our programs, while Northeastern Regional Director, Major (Ret.) Louise Nixon outlined the establishment of new chapters and regional responsibilities. The guests were delighted to hear Alpha Rho Chapter Basileus Shana Burton speak about her chapter’s experiences establishing a new chapter and bringing in new Sorors. National Executive Grammateus Deborah Sanders Davis also attended. Guests asked about the next steps in the recruitment process. Twenty-first Grand Basileus Yvonne Hinkson, Esq., gave closing remarks on the state of our nation and why the work of and membership in LKM is important. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the women who served as points of contact, including, Ms. Jacinta Williams for the Spartanburg area, and Member-at-Large Soror Jarita Berry for the Birmingham area. It was a fun and informative meeting, and we expect several outcomes including perhaps a new chapter or two or three or more! We will certainly have more interest events like this one.
